Employment Verification Process

The Payroll and Benefits office uses The Work Number for employment verifications for credit purposes. This service provides instant access to employment verification information through the web or a touch-tone telephone and is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

How to Verify Employment

SSU Employee
  1. Contact The Work Number to obtain a salary key. You will need to provide the following information:
    • Employee ID which is the last SIX digits of employee's Social Security Number + the two-digit month and two-digit date of birth
      • Example: SS-SSSS-MM-DD
    • Employer Code: 10396
    • Your PIN which is the two-digit month and two-digit day of your birth
      • Example: MMDD
    • The system will give you a one-time Salary Key
  2. Give your Salary Key to your employment verifier

  1. Obtain Salary Key from SSU employee.
  2. Contact The Work Number to verify employment using:
    • Employee ID which is the last SIX digits of employee's Social Security Number + the two-digit month and two-digit date of birth

    • Salary Key (obtained from SSU employee)

Each salary key may be used only once. An employee may have up to three active salary keys at one time.

General Information

When you apply for items such as apartment leases, car loans, mortgages, and other major loans, any requests for verification of your employment should be directed to "The Work Number for Everyone". This service is not available to student assistants and employees who have an hourly position in addition to their full-time/part-time position. This is a national service used by many major employers which provides employment verification through a fully automated system. The system is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

What you need to know

A "verifier" is an organization seeking employment and/or earnings information about you. A verifier can be a bank, loan or credit institution, background checking company, or even a prospective employer. Verifiers can obtain the following types of information from the automated system:

  • Job Title
  • Total time with company
  • Current pay rate
  • Pay frequency
  • Gross earnings for past two years + Year-To-Date earnings
    • State of California company Code: 10396
    • Your ID Number (Last 6 digits of SSN, followed by 2 digit month and 2 digit day of your birth)
    • Your Pin (Birth MMDD). (You can change your PIN by dialing 1-800-367-2884)
Authorization Types Details Give the following to the Verifier:
Basic

  • First Name, Middle Initial, and Last Name Spelled out
  • Employment Status/Job Title
  • Most recent start or termination date
  • Total time with company
  • Reference Number

  • Tell the verifier to go to www.theworknumber.com and click on the verifier icon to get proof of your employment (no income).

Full Verification
(Authorization Code REQUIRED)
  • Includes Basic Plus information, Plus
  • Gross earnings for YTD with the breakdown for overtime
  • Gross earning for prior two years
  • Reference Number

  • An Authorization Code (Salary Key)**

Your ID Number = The last 6 digits of your Social Security Number + 2 digit month and 2 digit day of your birth.

Generating Authorization Codes

You must generate an Authorization Code for each verification.
To generate an Authorization Code, go to www.theworknumber.com or dial 1-800-EMP-AUTH (1-800-367-2884). You may have 3 Authorization Codes outstanding. If unused, they will expire after 6 months.
You will need the following information to generate Authorization Code (Salary Key):

  • State of California company Code: 10396
  • Your ID Number (Last 6 digits of SSN, followed by 2 digit month and 2 digit day of your birth)
  • Your Pin (Birth MMDD). (You can change your PIN by dialing 1-800-367-2884)

A six-digit number will be voiced to you over the phone, or you can find it on The Work Number . This is your ONE-TIME USE Authorization Code or Salary Key.
Refer all questions to the Client Service Center at 1-800-996-7566. The Work Number Client Service Center is available Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. PST.

Who can verify SSU employment?

Employment verification can only be done through The Work Number. Department chairs, managers or staff shall not verify employment. SSU uses The Work Number to provide employment or income verifications to organizations such as mortgage companies or rental agencies.
