Common Human Resources System (CHRS)

What is CHRS?

The Common Human Resources System (CHRS) is a unified Human Resources data management system used by all 23 California State University campuses and the Chancellor’s Office. Built on PeopleSoft 9.2, CHRS includes enhancements developed collaboratively by subject matter experts from across the CSU and implemented by the Chancellor’s Office to support systemwide HR needs.

Sonoma State introduced the Common Human Resources System (CHRS) on May 13, 2026

MyHR plus Oracle PeopleSoft 9.2 plus customizations for the CSU system equals CHRS

Before CHRS

  • 23 Different versions of software, which is difficult and costly to maintain
  • Campuses using different HR processes
  • No common way of doing business or sharing resources
  • PeopleSoft 9.0 is not supported anymore

After CHRS

  • All campuses on one common system
  • Efficient and more cost-effective
  • Perform HR processes in a common way and can support other campuses
  • All campuses on PeopleSoft 9.2

Modules and Elements

CHRS includes these modules and elements:

Why are we implementing CHRS? What does it mean for me?

The Chancellor’s Office requires all CSU campuses to make this change. Moving to a consolidated environment will ensure consistency in processes and reporting across campuses. Once all campuses are in the consol dated environment, the Chancellor’s Office anticipates cost savings through a reduced number of databases and lower expenses for system upgrades.

CHRS brings Sonoma State and all CSU campuses to the latest cloud-based version of PeopleSoft, replacing our current system, which is no longer supported. The new system includes enhancements developed specifically for the CSU to better support campus HR needs.

By moving all campuses to a single, unified system, CHRS will:

  • Provide more consistent HR processes and reporting across the CSU.
  • Improve data accuracy and make reporting more efficient.
  • Enable the Chancellor’s Office to access system wide data directly, reducing manual
    reporting by campuses.
  • Lower long-term maintenance and upgrade costs by reducing the number of databases
    used across the CSU.

CHRS will impact Human Resources processes and procedures for staff and faculty. The system manages data such as budgeted positions, employment, job, and personal data. Enhancing the system will change aspects of self-service, time and absence management, recruitment, benefits, temporary academic employment, and more.

CHRS was created by the Chancellor's Office (CO) with guidance from experts across CSU campuses.

CHRS Recruiting is one part of the broader Common Human Resources System (CHRS). CHRS Recruiting, which is powered by PageUp, focuses on recruiting, hiring, and onboarding new employees. It was the first CHRS module implemented at Sonoma State and is used primarily by employees involved in the recruiting or hiring process.

Your SSU ID will remain the same and will continue to be used for campus services.

To support a single, standardized HR system across all CSU campuses, CHRS uses a common format for Employee IDs and Position Numbers. This helps ensure consistency in HR processes and reporting throughout the CSU.
